Wind Advisory
Statement as of 3:52 PM PDT on October 10, 2008

... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 am PDT Saturday...

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 am PDT Saturday for the
Owens Valley.

A strong cold front pressing through the valley... will continue to
bring north winds gusting 40 to 50 mph through the rest of the afternoon
and overnight. Winds will subside Saturday morning but become
breezy to locally windy at times.

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 30 to 39 mph and... or wind
gusts of 40 to 57 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make
driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use
extra caution.

Fire Weather Warning
Statement as of 12:01 PM PDT on October 10, 2008

... Red flag warning in effect until 7 PM PDT this evening for
strong winds and low rh...

The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued a red flag
warning for strong winds and low rh... which is in effect until 7
PM PDT this evening.

An approaching storm system will bring west to southwest winds
gusting over 40 mph to much of the warned area this afternoon and
evening. Relative humidities are expected to be below 15 percent
for much of that time as well.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring or are imminent. A combination of strong
winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will create
extreme fire growth potential.

Forecast as of 4:50 PM PDT on October 10, 2008

Now
As of 415 PM...strong northerly wind gusts in the 50 to 60 mile per hour range have been causing widespread areas of greatly reduced visibility due to blowing dust and sand in the Owens Valley. Brown outs have been reported by the California Highway patrol along many parts of Highway 395...suggesting the visibility is near zero at times. Route 395 between Lone Pine and Olancha is likely one of the most susceptible areas for Brown out conditions. The strong wind gusts are expected to continue through the evening.
