Flash Flood Watch, Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 12:33 am EDT on July 24, 2008

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of southern Connecticut and southeast New York...
including the following areas... in southern Connecticut...
northern Fairfield... northern Middlesex... northern New Haven...
northern New London... southern Fairfield... southern
Middlesex... southern New Haven and southern New London. In
southeast New York... Nassau... northeastern Suffolk...
northwestern Suffolk... southeastern Suffolk and southwestern
Suffolk.

* Through this evening

* a slow moving cold front approaching the area will provide a
focus for the development of numerous showers and thunderstorms
through Thursday evening. Showers and thunderstorms repeatedly
moving over the same areas could produce torrential
rainfall... with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

* Total rainfall amounts of 3 to 4 inches are expected... with
localized amounts in excess of 6 inches. Rainfall of this
magnitude will likely cause flash flooding of streams... urban
areas and poor drainage locations... as well as sharp rises on
larger streams and rivers. Flooding of flood prone basements
is also likely.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

1140 PM EDT Wed Jul 23 2008

The National Weather Service in Upton NY has issued an

* urban and small stream flood advisory for...
Fairfield County in southern Connecticut...
New Haven County in southern Connecticut...
Suffolk County in southeast New York...
eastern Nassau County in southeast New York...

* until 230 am EDT...

* at 1135 PM EDT thunderstorms producing heavy rain were moving
south to north around 35 mph across Long Island and southwestern
Connecticut. Rainfall rates between 3/4 and 1 inch per hour are
being observed with these storms which in combination rainfall
from earlier today will likely cause minor flooding of poor
drainage and low lying areas.

Minor flooding means that although streams and creeks may rise out of
their banks... property damage will be minimal. Inconveniences can be
expected but the flooding will not be immediately life threatening.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of floods.

Be prepared to take action if the flooding threat increases... or a
warning is issued.
