Areal Flood Warning
Statement as of 12:27 am EDT on July 24, 2008

The National Weather Service in Newport has issued a

* Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams in...
Greene County in eastern North Carolina...
Martin County in eastern North Carolina...
this includes the city of Williamston...
Pitt County in eastern North Carolina...
this includes the cities of... Winterville... Greenville...
Farmville... Ayden...

* until 615 am EDT

* at 1222 am EDT a line of heavy showers and thunderstorms were
moving over the coastal plains from Greene County moving northeast
around 15 to 20 mph through Martin County. Rainfall amounts of 2 to
3 inches have already fallen on the advised area. Additional showers
and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are expected to impact the
area over the next couple hours. Persistent heavy rain of another 2
to 3 inches could lead to flooded intersections and low lying areas
as ditches and drainage systems fill up. This could produce upwards
of 2 feet of water in localized spots on roadways. The water depth
may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Nighttime
flooding is especially hazardous because motorists may not see the
danger until it is too late. It is advised that those traveling
along area roads between Snow Hill... Greenville... and Williamston
drive slower than usual and be on alert for water covering roadways.
The safest scenario would be to remain off area roadways if possible
until the rain has passed. This includes Highway 258... 13... and
portions of 64 and 17 in Martin County. The threat will also impact
local roads 11... 30... and 903.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

To report flooding... have the nearest law enforcement agency relay
your report to the National Weather Service forecast office.
