| Now Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue to increase in coverage across portions of southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama. They are moving south southeast at around 10 mph. Additional showers and thunderstorms will develop across the region through the afternoon hours and will likely affect the beach areas during the mid to late afternoon. The primary threats with the thunderstorms today will be frequent cloud to ground lightning along with wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph. Due to the slow movement of the thunderstorms...very heavy rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely. No widespread severe thunderstorms are expected today...however a few thunderstorms could briefly become severe with wind gusts near 60 mph and large hail. If outdoors today and you hear thunder...be prepared to move to a place of shelter quickly as lightning can be a threat to your safety even if the thunderstorm is many miles away from your location. If driving...be prepared to slow your driving speeds if you encounter visibility reducing heavy rain. During and following heavy rains...roadways will have ponding water which can increase the potential of hydroplaning. |
