Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 8:18 am CDT on July 10, 2009

... Very hot weather will continue through the weekend...

An upper level ridge will continue to provide very hot weather
across the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles through the weekend.
Normal high temperatures for this time of year range from the lower
to middle 90s... but high temperatures today through Sunday are
forecast to climb to 10 degrees or more above normal. This means
high temperatures ranging from 100 to 110 degrees. A few locations
in the eastern Oklahoma Panhandle and northeast Texas Panhandle may
even eclipse 110 degrees today.

With dew point temperatures only falling into the upper 40s and lower
50s across the panhandles... heat indices are forecast to exceed 100
degrees across much of the region... ranging from 105 to 109 degrees
for many locations off The Caprock.

People spending time outdoors should limit their activity and drink
plenty of liquids... preferably water. Take frequent breaks and wear
light colored... loose-fitting clothing. Strenuous activities should
be reduced... eliminated or rescheduled to the coolest time of the
day. Prolonged exposure combined with physical activity can cause
heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Forecast as of 4:57 PM CDT on July 10, 2009

Now
Through 700 PM...a few showers and thunderstorms are beginning to develop across the Oklahoma and northern Texas Panhandle...mainly along a line from Beaver to Texline. Wind gusts to around 40 mph and rainfall amounts of a tenth of an inch may accompany these thunderstorms. Additional showers and thunderstorms will be possible throughout the afternoon and early evening hours across the western Oklahoma and northwest Texas Panhandle as a frontal boundary remains across these locations.
