High Surf Advisory
Statement as of 3:35 am EDT on September 7, 2008

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 6 PM EDT this
afternoon...

A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6 PM EDT this
afternoon.

While the Summer-like weather and high surf will draw people to
the ocean beaches... high surf on the ocean in the wake of
Tropical Storm Hanna will cause moderate beach erosion and strong
rip currents through the day.

The surf will be extremely dangerous and even venturing into the
surf a few feet could result in disaster. Beach goers should stay
completely out of the water!

Moderate or higher beach erosion is occurring during the pre-
dawn high tide which occurs around 3 am. The worst of the erosion
will occur from Fire Island east to Montauk where waves...
estimated at 8 to 12 ft... are crashing on to the beaches. Some
over-washes are also likely to occur.

Additional minor to moderate beach erosion will occur with the
afternoon high tide which occurs between 3 and 4 PM... but by this
time waves should have subsided to 5 to 7 ft.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.
