... New information...

The center of Tropical Storm Hanna is now about 430 miles south
of Wilmington. A Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch
remain in effect for coastal eastern North Carolina. A Tropical
Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected
within the warning area within the next 24 hours. A Hurricane
Watch warning means that hurricane conditions are possible within
the next 36 hours.

... Storm information...

At 500 am EDT... the center of Tropical Storm Hanna was located near
latitude 28.0 north... longitude 78.0 west or about 430
miles... south of Wilmington North Carolina.

Hanna is moving toward the northwest near 20 mph. A gradual turn
to the north with an increase in forward speed is expected later
today. On the forecast track... the center of Hanna will be near
the southeast coast of the United States later today.
However... rains and winds associated with Hanna will reach the
coast well in advance of the center.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 65 mph... with higher gusts.
Only slight strengthening is forecast prior to landfall...
although it is still possible for Hanna to become a hurricane.

The minimum central pressure just reported by the aircraft was
985 mb... 29.08 inches.

... Precautionary/preparedness actions...

All precautionary and preparedness actions should be rushed to
completion this morning before conditions deteriorate later today.

... Storm surge and storm tide...

A 3 to 5 foot storm surge is possible tonight continuing into
Saturday along the coast south of Cape Lookout. North of Cape
Lookout the surge is expected to average 2 to 4 feet. Storm surges
of 3 to 5 feet will also be possible along the banks of the Neuse
and Pamlico rivers.

The surf is expected to become very rough today through Saturday
with a high threat of dangerous rip currents.

... Winds...

Tropical storm force winds are expected to spread north through
the area late today and continue into Saturday morning. The
strongest winds of 40 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph are most
likely from late tonight continuing into early Saturday morning.
Conditions will improve from south to north during Saturday
afternoon.

... Inland flooding...

Rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches are possible with isolated
higher amounts. This could result in minor flooding of normally flood
prone locations.

... Tornadoes...

A potential will exist for tornadoes as Hanna approaches and
crosses the region later today into Saturday.
