The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a

* Flood Warning for
the South Fork Chariton river at Promise City.
* Until further notice... or the warning is cancelled.
* At 11:00 PM Thursday the stage was 13.2 feet.
* Minor flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 18.0 feet.
* Forecast... rise above flood stage by early Friday and continue to
rise to near 20.0 feet by Friday morning. The river will fall below
flood stage by Friday afternoon.

morning...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of south central Iowa... southeast Iowa and southwest
Iowa... including the following areas... in south central Iowa...
Appanoose... Clarke... Decatur... Lucas... Monroe... Ringgold...
Union and Wayne. In southeast Iowa... Davis and Wapello. In
southwest Iowa... Adair... Adams... Cass and Taylor.

* Until 7 am CDT this morning

* scattered showers and thunderstorms continue to affect portions
of southern Iowa early this morning. Additional rainfall... up to
an inch per hour... may still accumulate in areas. This is in
addition to the very heavy rains that fell Thursday morning and
again Thursday evening in several locations which may result in
aggravated or renewed flash flooding.

* Water running over roadways... washed out roads and bridges...
and significant urban flooding could create dangerous conditions
early this morning. Motorists should use extreme caution when
traveling in these areas.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to affect portions of southern Iowa during the early morning hours...some with locally heavy rains. The heavier downpours may accumulate an additional half inch to an inch in an hour. This may produce ponding water on roads...rapid rises in small streams and creeks...as well as aggravated or renewed flash flooding.
