Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 2:57 PM PDT on May 11, 2008

... Summer like temperatures in store for later this week...

A strong ridge of high pressure will build over the West Coast by
the middle of this week. Temperatures over the Central Valley will
warm into the 90s by Wednesday with a few of the warmer locations
approaching 100 degrees. As the high pressure strengthens over the
region temperatures will continue to warm into the upper 90s to
around 103 degrees for Thursday and Friday.

The ridge of high pressure will begin to push to the east by
Saturday bringing cooler but still well above normal
temperatures to the interior. Further cooling is expected through
the remainder of the weekend and into the first part of next week
as a trough of low pressure deepens over the Pacific northwest and
into northern California.

Even though the temperatures will be hot later this week... rivers
and streams will continue to be cold. People wading... rafting or
fishing in these waters become victims of the cold every year in
northern California. The cold water can bring on a sudden loss of
body temperature. This is called hypothermia and it can be fatal.

In addition... persons working outdoors or planning outdoor
activities should wear lightweight light-colored clothing... take
frequent breaks from the sun and drink plenty of non-alcoholic
fluids. Do not leave children or pets alone in an unattended
vehicle.
