Heat Advisory
Statement as of 9:50 PM PDT on July 8, 2008

... Heat advisory remains in effect from 2 PM Wednesday to 8 PM
PDT Thursday for the central and southern San Joaquin Valley and
the foothills of the southern Sierra Nevada and the Tehachapi
Mountains below 3000 feet...

A heat advisory for the central and southern San Joaquin Valley
and the foothills of the southern Sierra Nevada and the
Tehachapi Mountains below 3000 feet remains in effect from 2 PM
Wednesday to 8 PM PDT Thursday.

High temperatures for the central and southern San Joaquin Valley
and the elevations below 3000 feet in the southern Sierra Nevada
and Tehachapi foothills will be in the 105 to 112 degree range
Wednesday and Thursday. Low temperatures Wednesday night will be
in the mid 70s to lower 80s. The combination of these near record
hot temperatures and high humidities will result in heat index
values as high as 112 degrees during the afternoon and early
evening hours in the downtown metropolitan areas.

In addition... the valley air district has issued an air quality
alert due to smoke impacts from fires throughout the central
California interior in effect until noon Wednesday.

Never leave children or pets in a vehicle... even for short
periods of time. Temperatures inside vehicles can climb rapidly
to life threatening levels... even with windows partially open.

Pets are also susceptible to heat illness and should be cared for
accordingly.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected.
Hot temperatures will create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of fluids... stay in an air-conditioned
room... stay out of the sun... check up on relatives and neighbors who
might need assistance... and reduce outdoor exposure. For more
