Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 5:35 am PDT on May 17, 2008

... Heat wave to continue through Monday...

Strong high pressure over the West Coast and weak to moderate
offshore flow will continue hot weather across the area through
Monday. Daytime maximum temperatures will continue to rise into
the 90s across most of the interior sections with isolated
locations reporting temperatures to near 106 degrees through the
weekend. The hottest temperatures above 100 degrees will likely
occur in some foothill locations and across the valleys. Near
record temperatures are expected to occur at the Los Angeles
coasts today... with warmer than normal conditions continuing over
the other coastal areas. Temperatures at the beaches south of
Point Conception will climb into the mid 70s to upper 80s... while
inland portions of the coastal plain will likely warm to near 95
locally.

Records were tied or eclipsed in some valley and mountain
locations on Friday. Near record highs are forecast again for the
Valley... Mountain... and desert areas today and Sunday. In
addition... near record high minimum temperatures are expected to
occur tonight and possibly again Saturday night.

By the start of the work week... high pressure will begin to
weaken... and an increasing northwest flow should allow for a
sooner return of the afternoon sea breeze each day. Cooler
conditions should be expected to occur on Monday at the coastal
sections... and slightly cooler high temperatures across the
interior. More pronounced cooling will occur on Tuesday as strong
onshore surface gradients develop... pushing the marine intrusion
into valley and possibly foothill locations.

People planning outdoor activities through the weekend should take
into consideration the very high temperatures and adjust activities
accordingly. Wear loose fitting light weight clothing and drink
plenty of water. Take advantage of shade and air conditioning if
available.

Never... ever leave children... the elderly or pets in enclosed
automobiles... even for the shortest time. Temperatures quickly
rise to life-threatening levels... even if the windows are
partially opened.
